Business group Logistics UK has reacted with dismay to yesterday’s announcement of the continued relaxation of drivers’ hours legislation until 8 August 2021, which governs the length of time HGV drivers are legally expected to work.

P&O FERRIES’ DOVER-CALAIS FLEET BACK TO FULL STRENGTH AS FIFTH SHIP SETS SAIL ON RETURN TO SERVICE

The Pride of Burgundy – P&O Ferries fifth ship on its Dover-Calais route – arrived yesterday at the Port of Dover, returning to service with its first sailing in over a year.

With capacity to carry 120 lorries, the 28,000-ton Pride of Burgundy will return in freight-only mode, making two return journeys each day. The addition of a fifth ship comes in response to growing demand from British and European customers and will expand options for those requiring rapid and reliable transportation of goods between pivotal markets.

Yantian ‘resumes full operations’

China’s key southern container port of Yantian is expected to return to full operations today following several weeks of partial closure – although it will take weeks or even months to clear backlogs of cargo, freight sources warn, especially as peak season approaches.

Deal reached on release of Ever Given

The insurer of Ever Given said an agreement in principle has been reached to release the ship from the Suez Canal.

The UK P&I Club said the deal followed extensive discussions with the Suez Canal Authority’s negotiating committee in recent weeks.

Increased demand and worsening port congestion in Asia is forcing the east-west alliance carriers to temporarily adjust their liner service networks.

With long waits for berths on the US west coast and at several North European ports, attempts by shipping lines to recover a vessel’s schedule are being thwarted.

European road freight prices leap as available capacity plummets

European road freight spot prices jumped by more than 8% in May to a three-year high as available capacity plummeted to a three-year low, according to the latest monthly analysis by Transporeon, which attributed the changes largely to signs of economic recovery after the worst effects of the pandemic.
