Major ocean carriers set course for more-profitable routes 
 
Ocean carriers constantly reassess network coverage to cope with the impact of demand fluctuations but, post-pandemic, this has translated into widely different trading patterns for the top-ranked lines. 
 
A survey by Alphaliner reveals that, compared with a year ago, most of the top ten carriers have reduced their fleets trading between Asia and North America – MSC in particular having cut the percentage of its tonnage deployed on the transpacific from 16% to just 9%.

As its fleet grows, MSC maps out its post-2M standalone network 
 
MSC is preparing its network for a standalone operation after its exits the 2M east-west vessel-sharing agreement with Maersk at the end of next year – although many in the industry believe the split will happen by mutual consent sooner than that. 
 
Sources cite increasingly acrimonious exchanges over vessel-blanking strategies and fierce competition for customers, along with differences over the status of hub ports within the alliance network.

2M axes Asia-North Europe loop, as carriers shop for more tonnage 
 
After successive weeks of blanking its AE1/Shogun Asia-North Europe loop, the 2M Alliance has finally confirmed that the service is to be suspended. 
 
It is the first alliance service on the trade lane to be officially culled and is likely to be followed by the removal of more in the weeks to come as ocean carriers try to mitigate the impact of significantly reduced demand.

HUTCHISON PORTS AND TIL ANNOUNCE NEW DEVELOPMENT 
 
Hutchison Ports and Terminal Investment Limited Sàrl (TIL), the terminal investment company of Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), have announced a collaboration to develop a new container terminal in the Europahaven, where the north side of the Hutchison Ports ECT Delta terminal and Hutchison Ports Delta II (the former APMT-R site) are located.

MSC launches electronic bill of lading 
 
Moves to rid container shipping of some of its more archaic, paper-based processes have taken a further step forward with Mediterranean Shipping Co introducing a blockchain-based electronic bill of lading. 
 
The eBL enables shippers and others in the key supply chain to receive and transmit the bill of lading document electronically, without any disruption to business operations.

CONNECTING ISTANBUL AND THE UK VIA RAIL 
 
As part of MSC’s comprehensive range of cargo services between Europe and the UK, they are now offering the Omerli-Tekirdağ rail service. 
 
Once the cargo departs Turkey via Asyaport (Port of Tekirdağ), it’s just eight days until it reaches the Port of Felixstowe in the UK (or 12 days to the Port of Liverpool).

CMA CGM and MSC complete TradeLens integration 
 
Major global container carriers, CMA CGM and MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), have announced they are now integrated onto TradeLens, helping ensure a more fully integrated, timely and consistent view of logistics data for their containerized freight around the world. The digital platform is run on IBM Cloud and IBM Blockchain, and was jointly developed by IBM and A.P. Moller – Maersk.
