As its fleet grows, MSC maps out its post-2M standalone network 
 
MSC is preparing its network for a standalone operation after its exits the 2M east-west vessel-sharing agreement with Maersk at the end of next year – although many in the industry believe the split will happen by mutual consent sooner than that. 
 
Sources cite increasingly acrimonious exchanges over vessel-blanking strategies and fierce competition for customers, along with differences over the status of hub ports within the alliance network.

ONE LAUNCHES ITS ONE ECO CALCULATOR AS A MILESTONE TOWARDS NET ZERO 
 
Ocean Network Express (ONE) has announced the launch of the ONE Eco Calculator, which calculates carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from ONE’s operating vessels. The tool is one of the company’s milestones in its journey to net zero. 
 
With the ONE Eco Calculator, units are expressed as either Tank-to-Wake (TTW), a measure of emissions from burning fuel, which has been stored in a tank, or Well-to-Wake (WTW), a measure of emissions from fuel production, delivery, and use aboard ships.

2M axes Asia-North Europe loop, as carriers shop for more tonnage 
 
After successive weeks of blanking its AE1/Shogun Asia-North Europe loop, the 2M Alliance has finally confirmed that the service is to be suspended. 
 
It is the first alliance service on the trade lane to be officially culled and is likely to be followed by the removal of more in the weeks to come as ocean carriers try to mitigate the impact of significantly reduced demand.

Dutch shipping company WEC Lines has expanded its existing service into the Port of Liverpool with a new series of weekly calls into the port from Northern Spain, Portugal, North Africa and the Canary Islands.

HAPAG-LLOYD ACHIEVES EXTRAORDINARILY STRONG RESULT IN ITS ANNIVERSARY YEAR 2022 
 
On the basis of preliminary and unaudited figures, Hapag-Lloyd has concluded the 2022 financial year – in which it celebrated its 175th anniversary – with an EBITDA of USD 20.5 billion (EUR 19.4 billion). The EBIT rose to USD 18.5 billion (EUR 17.5 billion), which can primarily be attributed to higher freight rates. At the same time, disruptions in global supply chains and inflation have led to a significant increase in costs.

FREIGHTLINER AND ONE LAUNCH RAIL SERVICE USING GD+ FUEL 
 
On January 17th, 2023, a new Freightliner service made its first journey travelling from Southampton to Crewe. For this journey, ONE purchased GD+ fuel to cover 100% of the fuel volume required. 
 
The train then continued its journey to Freightliner Coatbridge terminal, Scotland, using an electric locomotive, making this one of the greenest rail freight routes in UK Rail.
