The Pride of Burgundy – P&O Ferries fifth ship on its Dover-Calais route – arrived yesterday at the Port of Dover, returning to service with its first sailing in over a year. 

 

With capacity to carry 120 lorries, the 28,000-ton Pride of Burgundy will return in freight-only mode, making two return journeys each day. The addition of a fifth ship comes in response to growing demand from British and European customers and will expand options for those requiring rapid and reliable transportation of goods between pivotal markets.

Some post-Brexit road freight traffic management measures put in place ahead of the UK’s departure from EU rules on 1 January will be removed this month, “as trade returns to normal levels” the UK’s Department for Transport (DfT) today announced.

The service will start on the 1st of June and will offer one daily sailing in each direction between the two ports. 

 

The service will be operated by the Gothia Seaways, which can carry up to 165 unaccompanied freight units (trailers or containers without drivers).

The logistics industry has welcomed the signing of a Brexit trade deal between the UK and the EU while highlighting the changes that lie ahead from the beginning of next year and the need to be fully prepared. 

 

In broad terms, the agreement makes provision for the UK and the EU to have access to each other's markets, ensuring that imported goods will not be subject to tariffs or quotas, although they will still be subjected to checks and controls.

The UK’s National Audit Office (NAO) has reported that there is still likely to be widespread disruption to UK-EU freight transport from 1 January 2021, despite some progress in recent months implementing the changes required to systems, infrastructure and resources to manage the border at the end of the UK’s post-EU Exit transition period.

The UK government has signed agreements with four ferry operators to provide freight capacity equivalent to over 3,000 HGVs per week, in an attempt to mitigate the risk of disruption to key freight flows and supply chains as the UK and the European Union (EU) adjust to new border processes at the end of the UK’s transition period from EU rules at the end of this year.
