Driver shortage will undoubtedly hit the consumer

The UK is facing a massive reduction in the number of qualified HGV drivers, which has been exacerbated by Brexit, the Covid-19 pandemic and recent IR35 tax changes.

The RHA has warned the Government that the UK’s ongoing HGV driver shortage will inevitably have an impact on the consumer, as the price of goods on the shelves is set to rise.

Reefer container freight rates have risen sharply this year “but remain far outgunned by the inexorable rise in dry box pricing”, according to Drewry’s newly launched Reefer Shipping Forecaster report.

Over half of container bookings rolled at some ports

Container shipping service quality is continuing to worsen, with the number of boxes being rolled increasing.

Figures from freight visibility platform project44 shows the percentage of containers missing their scheduled sailings is rising, with some carriers and ports rolling more than half their cargo in April.

Ocean freight rates out of Asia have continued rising, especially to the US, as reduced capacity, high demand and equipment issues leading to “extreme capacity or equipment shortages” in North China, southeast Asia, and Taiwan.

MSC launches electronic bill of lading

Moves to rid container shipping of some of its more archaic, paper-based processes have taken a further step forward with Mediterranean Shipping Co introducing a blockchain-based electronic bill of lading.

The eBL enables shippers and others in the key supply chain to receive and transmit the bill of lading document electronically, without any disruption to business operations.
