Ocean freight spot rates have continued to surge over the last week, with average rises close to 5% compared with the previous week across the eight major East-West trades assessed by container shipping specialist Drewry, and further rises expected this week.

Yantian ‘resumes full operations’

China’s key southern container port of Yantian is expected to return to full operations today following several weeks of partial closure – although it will take weeks or even months to clear backlogs of cargo, freight sources warn, especially as peak season approaches.

The insurer of Ever Given said an agreement in principle has been reached to release the ship from the Suez Canal.

The UK P&I Club said the deal followed extensive discussions with the Suez Canal Authority’s negotiating committee in recent weeks.
